Grants & Funding
Loft Insulation & Cavity Wall insulation
Loft Insulation and Cavity Wall Insulation are widely recognised as the two most effective energy saving products available. A poorly insulated home can lose up to 25% of it's heat through the roof and 35% through the walls. Government-backed grants are available to all home owners and private tenants. Insulation is 100% free if anyone is aged 70 or over or in receipt of a qualifying benefit, tax credit or allowance.
Solar Power
Using the power of the sun to heat your hot water or generate electricity saves on your energy bills and cuts Carbon Dioxide emissions. Government grants of £400 or 30% are available for domestic solar thermal systems. Public sector & charities can receive up to 50%. Solar PV grants have been replaced by Feed In Tariffs (FITs) allowing you to sell electricity back to the grid. In April 2011, grants for Solar Thermal will be replaced by Renewable Heat Incentives.
A heat pump works in the opposite way to a refrigerator, extracting heat from the ground or the air, compressing it and then increasing the temperature. Ground-source heat pumps provide space heating or pre-heat water. Air-source heat pumps typically provide under-floor or warm air heating. A £900 grant or 30% is available. In April 2011, grants for Heat Pumps will be replaced by Renewable Heat Incentives.
Burning organic matter consumes just as much carbon as it produces and is therefore considered to be Carbon Neutral. Automatic wood pellet-fed stoves for space heating and wood-fuelled boilers for hot water & central heating systems are eligible for a grant of £1,500 or 30% of the cost (whichever is lowest). In Scotland, a grant of 30% (up to £4,000 max) is available to install domestic stoves & boilers (non-automatic feed).
Wind Turbines convert the power of the wind into electricity which can be stored in batteries, used directly or fed into the grid. As with solar PV, mainstream grant funding has been replaced by the Government's new Feed In Tariffs or FITs. Anyone generating electricity can receive payments for generating electricity and (optionally) feeding it back into the grid. Savings are also made on existing electricity bills.
